I know this dreaded feeling because I was once in your shoes. In 2023 I graduated from a Chinese bachelor's programme from one of the top British Universities. The course was well-structured and based entirely on textbooks. Mind you, I was getting top grades and my lecturers were happy, but deep down I knew that if a Chinese person started a conversation with me, I would freeze and go mute.

3.9 GPA, but still couldn't hold a proper conversation 😭

That's when I decided to go against what the formal teaching industry prescribed us. I gave up textbooks and instead went on a quest to change my speaking and listening with the help of contemporary media.

Within 1 year I was able to follow films without English subtitles, could talk to Chinese people on the phone, it was honestly liberating to no longer feel ashamed of my level.

Which level should I sign up for?

Beginners level

You've passed HSK 2+ and so far you are able to get by and order food/drink, ask for directions and introduce yourself. But you still feel that your sentences come out painfully slowly and sound like they were made with google translate.

Intermediate level

You're already having basic conversations, and you can comfortably talk about your work or your travels, but if someone asks you about a deeper topic like philosophy or world views, you cringe and freeze. You lack the vocabulary and confidence to talk about these harder subjects.

FAQs

How long does it take to complete the material?

The material on our media hub is a dynamic and constantly being updated as new media trends emerge in China. This is because we want this hub to act as a resource you can use consistently for 1 year and actually get fluent in Chinese. To give a rough estimate, each chapter should take you about 1 week to complete, providing you work at a steady pace. In total there are 10 chapters to get through, which should take you a few months to go through.

How is this different to watching a YouTube video?

Watching YouTube videos in Chinese is a great way to practice your Chinese and we highly recommend you do so. But when it comes to the learning experience there is an inherent lack of structure. A lot of learners struggle to find media that is appropriate for their level, and do not have an effective system in place to retain vocabulary and structures they learnt from the media. Inevitably this causes a lot of learners to give up using media. That's why we created our platform with curated media that has in-built exercises and explanations ensuring you stay consistent without burning out.

Can I extend my access to the platform?

Of course! If you would like to extend access beyond 1 year, we offer extension of membership for an additional fee of £50.

Do I get feedback for my work?

Yes! Once you've completed a chapter, you are welcome to submit it for feedback. You will receive an explanation of your errors, and the exercises will be reset for you to redo.

How can I practice my speaking with the hub?

Great question! We've structured the hub precisely so you can practice speaking about everything you learn in each chapter. Each chapter has a prompt card that you can use, with questions that you can discuss with your language exchange partner (This is internally organised) This prompt is structured to help you practice and memorise new structures and new vocabulary. Our hub also offers sections where you can record yourself speaking and we can grade and send feedback on your tone and pronunciation.

What level do I have to be to join?

This course is not suitable for complete beginners starting from zero, however you are more than capable of joining our beginners level if you have a foundation in very basic Chinese. EG) you can order a coffee and you can briefly introduce yourself.
